Seven IoT Predictions for 2017 - Part VI: Consolidation in the IoT

As the Internet-of-Things becomes more wildly adopted across verticals from fleet management to retail, a growing number of wireless companies will try to join the race of being the best provider of IoT connectivity services. With more providers comes inevitable consolidation across the industry – smaller companies will be looking to provide larger companies, likely the buyers, with a special edge and value in order to be absorbed by the bigger and best in the industry.

Who should lead the push for IoT security?

Article | February 10, 2020

The ease with which internet of things devices can be compromised, coupled with the potentially extreme consequences of breaches, have prompted action from legislatures and regulators, but what group is best to decide? Both the makers of IoT devices and governments are aware of the security issues, but so far they haven’t come up with standardized ways to address them. The challenge of this market is that it’s moving so fast that no regulation is going to be able to keep pace with the devices that are being connected,” said Forrester vice president and research director Merritt Maxim. “Regulations that are definitive are easy to enforce and helpful, but they’ll quickly become outdated.”The latest such effort by a governmental body is a proposed regulation in the U.K. that would impose three major mandates on IoT device manufacturers that would address key security concerns.

AFWERX Makes a 5G-Enabled IoT Security Investment

AFWERX | April 12, 2021

The Air Force's innovation arm is looking at innovative ways to protect its networks, due to the development of internet-of-things technology and the introduction of 5G. Phosphorus Cybersecurity has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research contract by AFWERX. Under the terms of the deal, the company will assist the Air Force in developing a flexible security infrastructure to ensure that the 5G-enabled IoT devices it intends to install do not increase the network attack surface. The company's technology automates IoT inventory, patching, and credential management, allowing businesses to scale apps more quickly. Most automated security policy compliance solutions, such as inventory management, password rotation, and firmware updates, are currently designed for desktops and standard network services. It's now essential to introduce that approach to IoT and 5G-enabled devices, said the company officials. “What’s needed now is a solution for the other third of the network consisting of IoT to prevent the next ‘Verkada’ [surveillance camera hack] while enabling the warfighter to adopt next-generation technology,” Phosphorus Founder and CEO Chris Rouland said. “Adapting Phosphorus’s solution to 5G in support of this effort is critical to promoting the zero-trust environment necessary to secure our defense networks,” he added.
