We are moving to a time where many ‘things’ that we know and use have the capability to be connected to a network either wired or wirelessly. The way we use technology is becoming more integrated in all aspects of our daily lives and is steadily integrating within the enterprise environment. A core concern for businesses is therefore the risk of introducing Internet of Things (IoT) devices to the enterprise.

The Internet of Things (IoT) could not be timelier for biotech/pharma. With fierce cost pressures, thepush for value-based outcomes, and the need for flexible manufacturing solutions, the IoT is the much-needed shot in the arm to bring about transformational change.

Automation vendors and end-user industries have been investing in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), across their diverse applications, convinced with the view that IIoT is going to be the key driver for digital transformation.

Genomics is the study of the complete set of DNA in a person or other organism. DNA underpins a large proportion of an individual's health and disease status, therefore a genomic medicine approach is increasingly being applied in clinical settings.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a rapidly expanding world of connected objects. As IIoT systems proliferate, large amounts of data are consumed by machine learning algorithms and shared between partners, customers and others. IIoT is a technology environment in which integration and interoperability are critical capabilities and the complexity of this environment makes this difficult to achieve. Standards play a critical role in IIoT for five main reasons. First, users and vendors cannot engineer a custom interface every time components or systems need to interact. Standards can make this explosion of interfaces manageable; they are the lingua franca for interoperability. For suppliers, this eliminates needless costs related to common capabilities instead encouraging a focus on innovations that add value.
