The Internet of Things market has reached a level of maturity and is delivering on its potential for many organizations after years of trials and tribulations. As enterprises seek to move more IoT initiatives from proof of concept to production, it’s important to understand how IoT projects get tripped up. Today, just over half (53%) of all projects actually cross the chasm from POC to production deployment. So what gets in the way? At the top of the list are challenges associated with managing IoT costs and IoT system security. These two inhibitors have consistently ranked as the top two Achilles’ heels for the IoT industry since we started asking the question as part of our regular Voice of the Enterprise surveys in 2016.
Organizations need tools they can rely on to bring transparent and consistent cost controls along with hardened, end-to-end security. As the number of IoT use cases in any single firm explodes, stakeholders across OT, IT and line-of-business roles must come together to develop a consistent strategy around cost optimization and reliable/ secure connectivity to de-risk investments, understand target outcomes with KPIs that connect back to ROI, and break free from POC purgatory.
