M2M is rapidly growing and since its early days different "standard" protocols have emerged (e.g. OMA-DM, TR-069, MQTT, ...) or are emerging (e.g. CoAP or Lightweight M2M). Understanding which protocol to use for which application can be intimidating, therefore we propose to give an overview of these protocols to help you understand their goals and characteristics. We will give a status of the availaible open source implementations in the Eclipse M2M ecosystem, with projects such as Paho, Mihini and Ponte.

The Rise of the AIoT

Article | March 3, 2020

Artificial intelligence (AI) has existed in the public consciousness for decades. The (mostly) sentient machines playing the villains in Hollywood movies have never been realistic depictions of the technology, but they have left an impression, nonetheless. AI has proved as exciting to the layman as it is to the expert. Usually based in remote data centers, AI is capable of collecting and examining immense volumes of data, generating insights based on analytical algorithms. With varying degrees of autonomy, these capabilities have been put to use streamlining decision-making processes. While AI is often thought of as a product in its own right, it is increasingly intersecting with other parallel trends. Chief among these is the Internet of things (IoT), which enables previously isolated machines to “talk” to one another and, at the same time, generate data that makes new modes of operation a possibility.

The role of BSS in the journey to 5G monetization

Article | March 3, 2020

The rollout of commercial 5G services is well underway. This evolution is unlocking exciting new opportunities, but it also presents new challenges. To capture new 5G revenue streams, service providers must transform their existing business support systems (BSS), and develop clear roadmaps to guide this transformation. In the latest MIT Insights report, telecom executives share their vision for 5G-enabled BSS, and how they are preparing for it. Here, we explore some of the highlights. The benefits of 5G are well-documented. Low-latency connectivity and superior broadband speeds will open doors to fully automated factories and put driverless vehicles on our roads. Service providers will be able to provide cutting-edge solutions and superior consumer experiences. However, monetizing a 5G-fuelled IoT society requires a clear strategic roadmap – particularly when it comes to BSS. As 5G matures, BSS will play an increasingly important role in establishing the service provider’s position in the value chain – and having a clear BSS evolution plan is crucial.

Lock Down Personal Smart Devices to Improve Enterprise IoT Security

Article | March 3, 2020

The presence of internet of things (IoT) devices in employee’s homes is a neglected item in many enterprise threat models. Caution is certainly warranted here, but it’s entirely possible to improve your risk awareness and secure smart devices in a calm and measured way. Overlooking privacy and security risks has consequences. It’s in everyone’s best interest to consider the potential impact of every point of data output in your technological ecosystem. Any of these devices could affect the security of your digital connections. To minimize both personal and enterprise risk, it’s important to adhere to the following IoT security best practices.

New partnership reduces field testing of IoT modules

Article | March 3, 2020

IoT protocol stack features have been specified by 3GPP, an engineering organisation that brings national Standards Development Organisations (SDOs) from around the globe to develop technical specifications for the 3rd generation of mobile, cellular telecommunications, UMTS. IoT devices have to interact with different network configurations worldwide. It is therefore important to ensure that these features are working well in all sorts of configurations, configured by different network operators. To address this challenge, digital identity and security provider Gemalto (a Thales company) and Rohde & Schwarz have teamed up to significantly reducing expensive and time-consuming drive tests of IoT devices.
