The Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA is (obviously) a smart campus that leverages IoT in many ways. The IoT Show managed to get a pass to visit one of the labs where the Applied Innovation team of the Microsoft Digital Group tests and develops new IoT technologies for Smart Buildings. In this episode, Jeremy Richmond, from McDonald-Miller, demos a solution developed with the Applied Innovation team and used for the maintenance of the HVAC systems across Microsoft's Campus, integrating IoT sensors information and devices with Azure IoT and Dynamics 365 Connected Field Service.

Future ‘smart walls’ key to IoT

IoT equipment designers shooting for efficiency should explore the potential for using buildings as antennas, researchers say. Environmental surfaces such as walls can be used to intercept and beam signals, which can increase reliability and data throughput for devices, according to MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).Researchers at CSAIL have been working on a smart-surface repeating antenna array called RFocus. The antennas, which could be applied in sheets like wallpaper, are designed to be incorporated into office spaces and factories. Radios that broadcast signals could then become smaller and less power intensive.

Make Room For Public Clouds In Your Industrial IoT Strategy

Not too long ago, executives from manufacturing and related industries would not consider running their internet of things (IoT) initiatives from a cloud. Now? It’s hard to find one who doesn’t enthusiastically embrace some role for the public cloud. Makers of industrial IoT (IIoT) software platforms have undergone a similar change of heart, pivoting from making grand plans for multibillion-dollar global data center rollouts to wholeheartedly partnering with one or more of the hyperscale public clouds. So far, so simple: Public cloud is definitely now part of the industrial IoT story. But there are a multitude of ways to use a public cloud, from just installing your own software there to fully integrating with all of the cloud, development, and IoT services that the hyperscale public cloud platforms increasingly offer.
