IoT creates a low power wireless frenzy
No sooner do we have the latest version of the ZigBee standard tuned for IoT device development, then we availability of the Weightless-P wireless standard for wide area IoT links.
These are not competing standard. ZigBee operates in the 2.4GHz and Weightless-P is a12.5kHz narrowband radio standard operating in sub-GHz spectrum.
With industrial IoT systems in mind, Weightless-P provides 2-way communication at data rates ranging from 200 to 100kbit/s.
Weightless-P supports license-exempt SRD/ISM bands including 169, 433, 470 - 510, 780, 868, 915 and 923MHz.
It will have to compete with Semtech’s LoRa long-range wireless RF technology which is also targeting IoT deployments.
ZigBee 3.0 is the first version of the low-power wireless standard aimed specifically at IoT product development.
It defines the software stack from physical to application layer, and includes certification and branding for improved interoperability across a growing range of market segments.
It remains based on the existing ZigBee PRO Mesh networking topology.
ZigBee 3.0 is compatible with existing ZigBee Home Automation and ZigBee Light Link standards.
