Soracom Partners with Sony's Spresense IoT Microcontrollers

SPRESENSE from Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation has joined the Soracom Partner Space ecosystem, and SSS has recognized Soracom as a recommended provider of connectivity for its SPRESENSE microcontrollers, according to Soracom, Inc., a global provider of sophisticated IoT connectivity.

With a streamlined physical design, ultra-low power consumption, various sensor inputs, inbuilt GPS, and edge AI support, SSS's SPRESENSE 6-core microcontroller board is suited for professional IoT use cases. In addition, SPRESENSE is ideal for edge computing because of its unique combination of strong processing performance and excellent power economy. SPRESENSE is used in applications where sensor analysis, machine learning, image processing, and data filtering are required, but other microcontroller-based solutions fall short.

For global LTE Cat-M1 connectivity, SSS's SPRESENSE LTE extension board includes an onboard antenna. SSS's SPRESENSE LTE extension board, when combined with Soracom's global IoT connectivity, makes it simple to connect almost anywhere in the world, control connections via the Soracom console and API, and access a wide range of services supporting secure private networking, data and protocol management, and integration with leading cloud platforms.

New Omdia research finds enterprises are turning to 5G for their IoT needs

Enterprises are not only increasing their IoT spending and their deployment of devices but are doing so because IoT projects are meeting or exceeding return on investment (ROI) expectations according to the latest Omdia Internet of Things (IoT) Enterprise Survey. Omdia surveyed approximately 500 enterprises across countries that are deploying or are in the process of rolling out IoT solutions and found that over 90% of enterprises said their IoT projects have met or exceeded expectations. "Both IoT and 5G have been derided as overpromising and underdelivering, yet the IoT market is still developing and 5G technology is still evolving. While sometimes outrageous proofs of concept are touted for headlines, our survey results are clear: enterprises are embracing IoT and 5G is emerging as the preferred type of connectivity." John Canali, IoT Principal Analyst, Omdia Omdia's survey results are positive for players across the IoT value chain. Communications service providers will likely see growth in high-bandwidth, high-value connections as 66% of enterprises are using or plan to use 5G connections while 53% of enterprises are using or plan on deploying new connections using LTE. The responses were similarly encouraging for growth in low-bandwidth connectivity such as NB-IoT and LoRaWAN. "For enterprises, IoT solutions do not come without hurdles. Security, privacy, and complexity continue to be the three greatest pain points for enterprises. These issues all present opportunities for systems integrators (SIs), cloud providers, hardware vendors, component suppliers, and various other IoT vendors." In spite of the current economic climate and uncertainty around inflation, Omdia believes that enterprises will increasingly look to IoT solutions to address emerging enterprise needs including managing their supply chain or meeting environmental, social, and corporate governance goals (ESGs). Globalstar and Globalsat to Deploy IoT Solution for Monitoring of Renewable Energy Stations in Latin America

Globalstar has partnered with Globalsat Group to deploy a jointly developed IoT solution powered by Globalstar’s satellite network designed to monitor renewable energy stations located in remote areas of Latin America. The initial deployment will include 23,000 devices throughout the region with an expectation of additional opportunities in the short term. The energy stations, which are installed in remote areas, have historically presented cost implications surrounding access and, similarly, without notice of service shutdowns, have caused additional loss of time, revenue, and information. The new solution will allow clients to obtain daily data, including information on equipment status and energy consumption. Maintenance costs will also be drastically reduced with preventive scheduling and real-time response.
