In its most technical sense, it consists of integrating sensors and devices into everyday objects that are connected to the Internet over fixed and wireless networks. A new concept that develops on advances incommunications and IT by applying them to objects, enabling improved interaction.
Together, AI and IoT can fulfill the promise of the smart city by transforming every aspect of city government. But where do you start? The choices are overwhelming. A smart city uses information and communication technologies to improve the performance of urban services like energy, water, public safety and transportation, making cities safer, healthier, and more sustainable and resilient.

Smart power consumption and energy efficiency are thus becoming keys for the success of these applications and 5G technology. To that extent, 5G New Radio (NR) has progressed swiftly. The new 3GPP™ release is designed to significantly improve the performance, flexibility, scalability, and efficiency of current mobile networks. Improved power saving features now allow IoT developers to get the most out of the available battery capacity. This could make all the difference for new IoT use cases and efficiencies.

More than 50% of manufacturing companies have initiated IoT projects in order to achieve the benefits of monitored automation. Large investments in Smart Grid meters for gas and electricity has been carried out the past years and also surveillance and monitoring of the production equipment to predict maintenance is a very large driver for IoT investments in this Industry.

Two barriers currently exist to effective and powerful smart city solutions. First, many current smart city ICT deployments are based on custom systems that are not interoperable, portable across cities, extensible, or cost-effective. Second, a number of architectural design efforts are currently underway (e.g. ISO/IEC JTC1, IEC, IEEE, ITU and consortia) but have not yet converged, creating uncertainty among stakeholders. There is a lack of consensus on both a common language/taxonomy and smart city architectural principles.
