Connecting the smart home: The history of wireless protocols – and why they matter

If you work in IoT, you’re probably familiar with the annual reports and data points that tell us about the opportunities in the connected home. A recent report from Crimson Hexagon found that “from 2014 to 2017 the sentiment towards smart home technology started to sway, with over 60 percent of consumers favoring the technology.”There are lots of factors that impact why consumers choose smart home – entertainment, convenience, increasing home efficiencies and energy expenditures, security – but behind the scenes, almost everyone who plays a role in the IoT industry knows one of the biggest barriers to adoption continues to be interoperability and the growing number of wireless protocols used in smart home devices.
