Azure Sphere, Microsoft's Linux-Powered IoT Security Service, Launches

February 24, 2020 / KURT MACKIE

Microsoft's Azure Sphere security solution for Internet of Things (IoT) devices became generally available (GA) on Monday, roughly two years after it was first introduced. The aim of Azure Sphere is to create an overall trusted environment for deploying and using IoT devices. It comprises various hardware, software and services components, which perhaps contributed to its somewhat lengthy development. According to Microsoft's announcement, Azure Sphere's "software and hardware have completed rigorous quality and security reviews" with its GA release. Microsoft supplied a reference architecture for the "microcontroller units," and it gets used in Azure Sphere chips that are built by Microsoft's hardware partners.
