Renesas Delivers Industry’s Most Complete Intelligent Sensor Solutions for IoT Applications

Renesas | June 27, 2022

Renesas
Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, is changing the way designers build sensor-connected IoT applications with a range of new solutions targeted at faster design cycles, improved accuracy, and reduced system cost.

In addition to the new HS4XXX family of relative humidity and temperature sensors, Renesas is introducing the ZSSC3281 sensor signal conditioning (SSC) IC for highly accurate amplification, digitization, and sensor-specific correction of sensor signals. These new products complement Renesas’ extensive MCU portfolio and embedded AI solutions.

The sensor design process is supported by Renesas’ unique system design platform that significantly eases the prototyping of IoT systems. The Renesas Quick-Connect IoT system consists of standardized boards and interfaces, enabling designers to quickly and easily connect a wide range of sensors to MCU/MPU development boards. The new system also delivers core software building blocks that are portable between boards, greatly reducing coding requirements. Now, instead of writing and testing hundreds of lines of driver code, designers only need to graphically select their sensor and write a few lines of code. All the integration and setup effort happen behind the scenes, reducing the time to a working solution.

Renesas also provides numerous Winning Combinations that combine sensors with multiple other ICs to offer customers an elevated design platform that mitigates the design risks and reduces development time.

According to a recent Zion Market Research study, the Global IoT sensors market is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 27.9%, reaching an estimated $27.9 billion by the year 2028.

“Sensing solutions are a critical element in IoT systems, and present numerous design challenges during system integration that can slow development and impact overall system performance, The combination of our sensor technology, signal conditioning expertise, and system solution mindset enables us to deliver customers a design platform that is unmatched by any competitor.”

DK Singh, Senior Director of the Systems and Solutions Team at Renesas

With more than 20 years’ experience, Renesas has deep and broad expertise in the sensor market. Renesas’ portfolio includes sensor signal conditioners, biosensors, humidity and temperature sensors, light and proximity sensors, flow sensors, and position sensors.

aiSensing Deploys Highly Successful End-Point AI Vibration Sensor Using SensiML Analytics Toolkit and QuickLogic EOS S3

SensiML Corporation | July 27, 2022

SensiML™ Corporation, a leading developer of AI tools for building intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints, today announced that its customer, aiSensing, has successfully completed and deployed an endpoint AI-based vibration sensor for a large multi-national manufacturer in Asia. This intelligent endpoint monitors vibration patterns for multiple machines, detects potential anomalies, and issues maintenance requests when necessary. The result is reduced equipment downtime and higher overall factory productivity. Since the AI implementation is local, rather than cloud-based, the system features low cost, low latency and fast reaction times while simultaneously providing higher data security. aiSensing's customer is one of the largest and most successful manufacturing companies in Taiwan. It is the leading manufacturer of specialty adhesives, footwear adhesives, hot-melt adhesives, and liquid and powder coatings. The company has adopted this Edge AI-based approach to detect anomalies for vacuum pumps and chilling machines used in its manufacturing flow, including problems related to lack of lubrication, water leakage, bearing failures, and belt failures. By identifying potential problems before they arise, maintenance issues can be addressed in a managed way rather than as ad hoc emergency situations. This type of predictive maintenance is a key component of modern smart manufacturing initiatives. The AI-based endpoint was developed on a QuickLogic EOS S3 ultra-low power multi-core Arm Cortex MCU-based SoC, which delivered more than enough processing bandwidth for the application at a low cost. The AI application running on the QuickLogic device was built using the SensiML Analytics Toolkit, which provided a complete solution for the quick development of this sophisticated IoT endpoint. "Smart manufacturing is a significant trend across a broad range of industries, Predictive maintenance is one of the core initiatives in that trend, and aiSensing's vibration sensor is a great example of how to effectively use AI to implement a practical and cost-effective predictive maintenance solution." Chris Rogers, chief executive officer at SensiML "Our endpoint AI-based vibration sensor has been very successful," said Dennis Chu, chief technology officer at aiSensing. "Its low power consumption, fast response times, and low cost are the ideal combination of features for this predictive maintenance application. With the SensiML tools, we can easily modify the design to address new and unique requirements for our customers." The SensiML Analytics Toolkit, QuickLogic EOS S3 SoC, and aiSensing's endpoint AI vibration sensor are each available now. About SensiML SensiML, a subsidiary of QuickLogic (NASDAQ: QUIK), offers cutting-edge software that enables ultra-low power IoT endpoints that implement AI to transform raw sensor data into meaningful insight at the device itself. The company's flagship solution, the SensiML Analytics Toolkit, provides an end-to-end development platform spanning data collection, labeling, algorithm and firmware auto generation, and testing. The SensiML Toolkit supports Arm® Cortex®-M class and higher microcontroller cores, Intel® x86 instruction set processors, and heterogeneous core QuickLogic SoCs and QuickAI platforms with FPGA optimizations.

AMTSO Publishes Guidelines for Testing of IoT Security Products

AMTSO | September 06, 2022

AMTSO, the cybersecurity industry's testing standard community, today announced it has published its first Guidelines for Testing of IoT Security Products. Comprised of input from testers and vendors, the guidelines cover principles for the testing of IoT security products providing recommendations on test environment, sample selection, testing of specific security functionality, and performance benchmarking for testers. The guidelines include the following sections: General principles: All tests and benchmarks should focus on validating the end result and performance of protection delivered, instead of how the product functions on the backend. Sample selection: The guidelines provide guidance for challenges with choosing the right samples for IoT security solution benchmarking. For a relevant test, testers need to select samples that are still active, and that actually target the operating systems smart devices are running on. Determination of "detection": IoT security solutions work very differently than traditional cybersecurity products when it comes to detections and actions taken; for example, some solutions will simply detect and prevent a threat without notifying the user. The guidelines suggest to use threats with admin consoles that can be controlled by the tester or to use devices where the attack will be visible if conducted. Test environment: In an ideal case, all tests and benchmarks would be executed in a controllable environment using real devices. However, the setup can be complex, and if the tester decides against using real devices in the testing environment, it is advised that they should validate their approach by running their desired scenario with the security functionality of the security device disabled and checking the attack execution and success. Testing of specific security functionality: The guidelines embrace advice on different attack stages, including reconnaissance, initial access, and execution. They outline the possibility to test each stage individually vs. going through the whole attack at the same time. Choices on this should be documented in the testing methodology. Performance benchmarking: The guidelines also provide considerations on performance benchmarking, e.g. suggesting to differentiate between various use cases such as consumers vs. businesses, or the criticality of latency or reduced throughput per protocol, which depends on its purpose. The guidelines were approved by the AMTSO membership in June 2022. About AMTSO: AMTSO is the cybersecurity industry's testing standard community, consisting of over 60 security and testing member companies from around the world. The organization offers a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration on objective standards and best practices for anti-malware testing and assessment of other cybersecurity products. The AMTSO standard raises the bar for cybersecurity tests, contributing to more fairness in the industry, and creating transparency for consumers and businesses looking for the best digital protection.
