Opportunities and Use Cases for Distributed Ledger Technologies in IoT
The launch of Bitcoin in 2008 showed that distributed ledger technologies could be used to create a decentralised, peer-to-peer trust network where transactions in the form of payments could be secured without depending on a central authority. Since the launch of Bitcoin there has been widespread interest and activity in extending the application of distributed ledgers to other application areas. This has resulted in developments such as ‘smart contracts’ on the Ethereum1 blockchain or specialised ‘tokens’ such as IOTA2 focused on IoT applications and GDPR compliant ledgers, like the Sovrin ledger, for identity management.
