CES 2020: Are you ready for the Intelligence of Things?

In his CES 2020 preview, Steve Koenig, vice president for the Consumer Technology Association, said there’s a new IoT in town. No, not the Internet of Things – rather, the “Intelligence of Things”.“We’ve ticked the device-connectivity boxes,” he explained, and over the next decade we will so an explosion of intelligent connectivity solutions, with devices that anticipate human needs, enable smart city infrastructure and contribute to global sustainability. But this is more than just a headline grabbing talking point – proof-of-concept already exists in agriculture, where technology is used to help reduce costs, labor, and waste. These automated harvesters, if you will, free up manpower for other tasks. Drones are able to quickly identify dry spots in a field and automated water systems will hit these areas near instantly.

Make Room For Public Clouds In Your Industrial IoT Strategy

Article | March 1, 2020

Not too long ago, executives from manufacturing and related industries would not consider running their internet of things (IoT) initiatives from a cloud. Now? It’s hard to find one who doesn’t enthusiastically embrace some role for the public cloud. Makers of industrial IoT (IIoT) software platforms have undergone a similar change of heart, pivoting from making grand plans for multibillion-dollar global data center rollouts to wholeheartedly partnering with one or more of the hyperscale public clouds. So far, so simple: Public cloud is definitely now part of the industrial IoT story. But there are a multitude of ways to use a public cloud, from just installing your own software there to fully integrating with all of the cloud, development, and IoT services that the hyperscale public cloud platforms increasingly offer. I explore this range of options in my latest report, “Hyperscale Public Clouds Power Your Industrial IoT Future,” and shall be discussing the issues in a client webinar on March 31.

Driving Rapid and Continuous Value for IoT Through an Ecosystem Approach

Article | March 1, 2020

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing is roaring back to life, and with it comes a renewed focus on Digital Transformation initiatives. The industry stands on the doorstep of its much-anticipated renaissance, and it’s clear that manufacturing leaders need to not only embrace but accelerate innovation while managing critical processes like increasing capacity while maintaining product quality. Effective collaboration will be key to doing both well, but it’s even more critical as workforces have gone and are still largely remote. As the virus swept the globe, it became apparent quickly that there would be winners and losers. Many manufacturers were caught off-guard, so to speak. Before manufacturing’s aforementioned reckoning, the industry had already been notorious for its slow adoption of the digital, data-centric mindset that has transformed other industries.

Hitachi, Infineon promote IoT tech for viral detection

Article | March 1, 2020

Tech companies are stepping up Internet of Things technologies to protect against COVID-19 and future viruses by using LiDAR and infrared cameras to detect a person’s body temperature from a distance or even handwashing. Keeping the data secure in such detection is also going to be a challenge. One approach is to put a chip inside an IoT device when it is manufactured to enable strong authentication and secure communication, mainly to guard against device counterfeiting. Hitachi Vantara has touted forward looking infrared cameras (FLIR) cameras to detect the temperature of a person from a distance. That way a passenger on a train or a worker or a customer in a store can be non-intrusively screened, according to a blog from Mark Jules, global vice president of smart spaces and video intelligence.

The road to industrial IoT security

Article | March 1, 2020

One of the main topics of this year’s RSA Conference is IT-OT cybersecurity convergence. But what are we talking about? Industrial IoT (IIoT) is all around us: in water, in gas, and electricity distribution networks, running power plants and critical infrastructure, in production lines and transportation networks, and more. In the traditional IT world, security risks involve threats that would undermine the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and systems. Given that in 2019, $3.5 billion was lost to known cyber-scams and ransomware according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report, the impact is largely financial. IIoT drives the physical world where operational technologies (OT) are used. The risk in IIoT environments involves threats that would undermine the operational safety (physical security of goods and people, environmental impact) and the availability or even the physical integrity of the production process. Theft of intellectual property and trade secrets is a major concern, and the impact is not just financial, but also social, human, and ecological.
