Working with an army of global adopters and cybersecurity experts, the CIS Controls team created a cloud security companion guide to help secure cloud environments. This guide helps organizations break down and map the applicable CIS Controls and their implementation in cloud environments using consensus-developed best practices. Cloud Challenge: Sharing the Responsibility One of the main challenges in applying best practices to cloud environments is tied to the fact that these systems operate under different assumed security responsibilities than traditional on-premises environments. There is often a shared security responsibility between the user and the cloud provider. In this guide, we identify who is responsible for cloud security tasks outlined in the controls that are specific to the service models.

Driving Rapid and Continuous Value for IoT Through an Ecosystem Approach

Article | May 19, 2021

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing is roaring back to life, and with it comes a renewed focus on Digital Transformation initiatives. The industry stands on the doorstep of its much-anticipated renaissance, and it’s clear that manufacturing leaders need to not only embrace but accelerate innovation while managing critical processes like increasing capacity while maintaining product quality. Effective collaboration will be key to doing both well, but it’s even more critical as workforces have gone and are still largely remote. As the virus swept the globe, it became apparent quickly that there would be winners and losers. Many manufacturers were caught off-guard, so to speak. Before manufacturing’s aforementioned reckoning, the industry had already been notorious for its slow adoption of the digital, data-centric mindset that has transformed other industries.

Hardware Threats to an IoT Ecosystem

Article | May 19, 2021

An IoT ecosystem, like any biome on Earth, is constantly subjected to changes and threats at various scales. Whether the system is an asset tracking solution in a hospital to help deliver more effective healthcare or cold chain management ensuring temperature control during transportation, the hardware/sensor is where the data journey commences in an IoT ecosystem. The integrity of these hardware components is paramount to the success of an IoT solution, but there are currently critical threat points on these devices which left unaddressed could be disastrous. Much of the focus of IoT security is on keeping the communicated data from IoT devices untampered up the solution stack. Methods like end-to-end AES encryption are currently standard by most network protocols and are well secured and tested.

Microsoft Introduces Seamless Integration of Azure IoT with Cisco IoT

Article | May 19, 2021

An integrated Azure IoT solution provides the necessary software, hardware, and cloud services that businesses need to rapidly launch IoT initiatives and quickly realize business value. Using software-based intelligence pre-loaded onto Cisco IoT network devices, telemetry data pipelines from industry-standard protocols, like OPC-Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) and Modbus, can be easily established using a UI directly into Azure IoT Hub. Services, like Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics, Microsoft Azure Machine Learning, and Microsoft Azure Notification Hub services, can be used to build IoT applications for the enterprise. Additional telemetry processing is also supported by Cisco through local scripts developed in Microsoft Visual Studio, where filtered data can also be uploaded directly into Azure IoT Hub. This collaboration provides customers with a fully integrated solution that will give access to design tools, global connectivity, advance analytics, and cognitive services for analyzing IoT data.
