Organizations around the world are coping with a variety of challenges related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Many companies are struggling to convert their processes from ‘in-office’ to ‘remotely accessible’. And, they’re scrambling to find new ways to “remote” tasks – with “remote” now becoming a verb. For example, we’ve heard from many customers that adding or expanding remote employee access capabilities is a hot topic. One such customer told us that they went from 9% of their workforce working remotely, to 52%. Wow! That’s not only a substantial change to operations and processes – it also directly impacts the company’s security posture. The challenge facing OT security practitioners is daunting. We absolutely must secure the people and systems responsible for saving mankind from an alien super-virus pandemic. But, while the bad guys are lobbing attacks from afar, the good guys are acting behind the scenes like NPCs (non-player characters). They’re bypassing the security systems we developed through years of hard work, like using Gmail or Zoom, or turning off anti-virus, in the name of getting things done.
By the end of this year there will be 5.8 billion Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints, according to Gartner. And depending on how IoT devices are counted the number is even higher. Statista, for example, estimates the device count for 2020 to be more than 30 billion. Security remains a big challenge for IoT as a strategy to be successful. IoT devices are still not being designed with security as a top priority.Mary O’Neill, VP of security at Nokia, noted in a press conference at MWC Los Angeles 2019 and reported by SDXCentral, that “if an IoT device today is plugged into the network and it doesn’t have protection on it, it’s infected in three minutes or less.”Jake Williams, founder of the security firm Rendition Infosec, said that “IoT vendors emphasize, often rightly, that their products improve quality of life, but they often neglect to disclose the risk of these devices to consumers. The onus of understanding how an IoT device might impact security should not be purely on the consumer. The vendor shares this responsibility.

Healthcare technologies will be a greater priority among IoT service providers once the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 die down, according to Forrester Research. Based on its latest figures, only 7% of the work that major IoT service providers deliver in APAC is on Smart Healthcare. The crisis has triggered a lot of ideas and solutions, however there was simply no time to look at a more strategic approach for both the technologies and the processes. This will be the focus of governments, health care providers, and others, once the acute crisis is behind us,” said Achim Granzen, principal analyst at Forrester, told FutureIoT. He added: “I expect this number to increase past Covid-19, as governments, healthcare providers, and others will seek to harden many of the ad-hoc systems and measures they have put into place during the crisis.”
