This week’s Earth Day coverage included a smart reminder that the Internet of Things (IoT) can be made green   and green technology can be maximized with smart use of IoT. The Microsoft for Work blog talks with Sean Green, CEO of Simply Solar, who points out that collecting and analyzing data helps consumers make smarter choices about their use of energy, including their strategies for getting the greatest value from investments in solar panels and storage solutions. For example, data showing that energy demand for a water heater increases after dark can prompt an apartment building manager to install water heaters with larger, better insulated tanks to more effectively retain heat generated during the daylight hours.

The Importance of IoT Platforms Through the Eyes of an MVNO

Article | March 16, 2020

IoT has a massive scope and too many requirements that can leave even the best of telecom operators clueless. With exalted predictions in the near future (some estimate that IoT devices will cross the 40 billion mark by 2025), the pressure on IoT service providers is immense. There is a need to automate the management of connected devices and sensors, which is why a comprehensive IoT platform has become the need of the hour. Every single one of these platforms plays a huge role in the overall functioning of sensors and devices that form the entire IoT universe. An IoT platform serves as a middleware that connects devices/sensors. It contains an assortment of functions such as controllers and sensors, a communication network, a gateway device, translating and data analysis software along with end application services. IoT platforms are equipped to handle vast quantities of data, applications, subscribers, websites, sensors and devices, and at the same time triggers actions according to the input, in real-time.

IoT Security: Inherent Risks Require Robust Solutions

Article | February 25, 2020

IoT technologies offer many remarkable benefits. They can make complicated tasks, such as tracking a fleet of thousands of vehicles, monitoring and adjusting manufacturing processes or automating a smart home or office simpler, easier and more cost-effective than ever before. By inviting IoT devices into our homes, workplaces and public spaces, however, we also expose new attack surfaces. When we assign an IoT system to be responsible for a critical task or trust it to monitor sensitive information in our most private spaces, we want to ensure that the system can be trusted. For this reason, it is vital that security best practices are applied at all stages when developing an IoT solution.

Automotive Cyber Security: A Crash Course on Protecting Cars Against Hackers

Article | March 26, 2020

Modern cars have dozens of computers on board, and they’re not just for running GPS or playing music. Computers monitor and control nearly every system on your vehicle, including steering, brakes, and the engine itself. This is why automotive cyber security is essential. If a vehicle’s computer systems aren’t properly protected, hackers can steal data or even take control of the vehicle. As you can imagine, that makes automotive cyber security a major concern for consumers, auto companies, and OEMs alike. But what is there to know about automotive cyber security? We’ll explore what cybersecurity in the automotive industry entails and what the biggest threats are to automotive IoT and connected vehicles. We’ll also share some insights from a recent webinar by Sectigo and Mentor Graphics on how to protect connected vehicles from emerging cybersecurity threats.

IoT: Quench the thirst for smart water management

Article | April 7, 2020

Water is one of our most precious resources. Yet every year, we lose more than 126 million cubic meters globally to leaks, poor metering and theft. Beyond that is the energy wasted moving water that never gets used. It adds up to staggering economic – and environmental – costs. It also presents one of the most compelling opportunities to use industrial IoT solutions. Water utilities can use IoT to address two fundamental aspects of water management: maintaining the physical infrastructure and addressing water safety and sustainability. With IoT sensors throughout a water utility’s infrastructure, it becomes possible to. In many ways, these uses mirror what’s possible in manufacturing. But while factory floors are condensed environments – with all assets located in a confined area – water utilities operate highly distributed environments. Reservoirs, pipes, pumps and other assets are spread across a massive physical footprint. Such environments introduce some unique challenges. One of the most pressing is cost. Capturing data across a massive infrastructure – and moving it to the enterprise and/or cloud – is a heavy lift. That’s especially true when considering the criticality of timely transmission and analysis of water data. Any delay can contribute to continued losses.
