IoT Adoption: Before and After COVID-19

Article | April 14, 2020

The survey data I’m referring to comes from a study conducted by the Eclipse Foundation about the adoption of commercial Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The aim of the study was to get a better understanding of the IoT industry landscape by identifying the requirements, priorities, and challenges faced by organizations deploying and using commercial IoT technologies. More than 350 respondents from multiple industries responded, with about a quarter of respondents coming from industrial production businesses. While this survey was not solely focused on the manufacturing and processing industries, its results reflect the general business community’s IoT adoption at the end of 2019. As such, it is a pre-COVID-19 snapshot of IoT adoption.

IoT as a Service: Lowering the Cost Barrier of IoT for Small and Mid-Sized Businesses

Article | April 14, 2020

There are already 20 billion IoT-connected devices, and 8 billion of those are devices used by enterprises, according to a report by Gartner. The impact of the Internet of Things market is potentially $11 trillion by 2025. The investment in IoT has come primarily from large businesses, but the technology is increasingly available via ‘as-a-service’, making it possible for businesses of all sizes to benefit. The ‘as-a-service’ model reduces the cost of ownership and capital expenditures and makes it easy for small businesses to investigate IoT with smaller up-font investments and less risk. Frank Della Rosa, research director at IDC, said that “Software as a Service (SaaS) continues to be the most highly deployed cloud segment, representing a commanding 62.4% of the total cloud market revenues.”

Automotive Sales: Improving the Customer Experience Using IoT

Article | April 14, 2020

Customer touchpoints throughout the automotive sales cycle are prime candidates for IoT innovation. Across the board, the data derived from these IoT applications have the capability to provide insights and actionable outcomes which can significantly improve the customer experience. When a customer arrives at a dealership, it may be difficult for the dealer to know if they have what the customer is looking for. For instance, a customer might be coming in to see a particular vehicle, test-drive a car they’ve already seen, or to casually browse their options. Without any data behavior on the customer beforehand, sales personnel or the dealership may not be properly equipped to handle the customer’s request. Perhaps a requested car is no longer on the main show floor for immediate display but instead buried somewhere in a backlot. Maybe another car that was requested for a test drive may not yet be properly serviced for operation. These are only a few of the challenges associated with automotive sales that IoT is capable of helping to improve.
