A new report from ABI Research predicts that cloud platform suppliers will see a more than $50 billion increase in their share of IoT data and analytics revenue by 2026.Companies providing cloud services have spent years building out their investments in the IoT space and continue to make headway in spreading cloud usage throughout the IoT value chain. The figures come from ABI Research's IoT Analytics and Data Management Services Strategies of Major Cloud Suppliers application analysis report, which examined the competitive outlook of the cloud vendor market and recent acquisitions. The report takes an in-depth look at how leading cloud providers like AWS, Azure, Oracle, Cisco, Huawei, SAP, Google, PTC, Cloudera are positioned in the IoT market and it compares the tools and services offered by each company. It is designed to help IoT companies figure out who the market leaders are, which cloud platforms would be most relevant for their particular industry and revenue forecasts from 2019 until 2026 for IoT integration, storage, analytics, presentation and professional services.
So you’re building an IoT solution and you’re ready to select your connectivity approach. Should you use Bluetooth? WiFi? LoRa? Cellular? Satellite? As I’ve explored in a previous post, the connectivity approach you choose ultimately comes down to the specific needs of your use case. Some use cases favor mobility and bandwidth, and power consumption doesn’t matter as much. Other use cases favor extensive battery life and broad coverage, and bandwidth doesn’t matter as much. In this post, I argue that for Enterprise IoT solutions, you shouldn’t use WiFi regardless of the use case. To build and implement a successful IoT solution, your connectivity needs to be reliable and consistent. When there’s an issue that needs troubleshooting, knowing that certain components of your IoT solution are reliable and consistent enables you to narrow your focus and address issues more effectively. There are many challenges in IoT, many of which stem from operational challenges and from having thousands of devices out in the real world where they’re subject to harsh, ever-changing environments.
As consumer demands evolve, fleet managers are turning to IoT to deliver products faster and more efficiently. The progress being made in edge computing represents the full potential of IoT: the power of data on the move. However, operating on the edge also reveals some of IoT’s greatest challenges: maintaining network security as the number of endpoints multiplies; rethinking traditional business models as industries become increasingly interdependent; and, perhaps most importantly, establishing a seamless, reliable network across borders, cultures, and regulatory environments.
As the industrial IoT market continues to expand at rapid rates, companies across the world are reaping the benefits. Utilizing this growing network of tools and systems, businesses have been able to prevent costly downtime, decrease product development costs, enhance customer engagement and satisfaction and acquire and implement intelligent data for strategic planning purposes. The potential benefits are seemingly endless, and the list of organizations that are embracing this industrial revolution is continuing to grow, so let’s highlight some of the main IIoT companies you need to know for a number of the most common IIoT use cases.
