Space Capital Leads $4.3m Investment in Scottish-based Space Technology Start-up R3-IoT

Space Capital, R3-IoT | August 02, 2021

R3-IoT, a satellite-enabled connectivity start-up, has closed a $4.3million seed investment round led by New-York based Space Capital, as it gears up for global expansion. Led by space technology experts Allan Cannon and Kevin Quillien, R3-IoT addresses challenges that organizations face in digitizing business operations, products, and services due to a lack of, or unreliable, communications infrastructure. Focused on the market gap underserved by the current space race, R3-IoT aims to provide value extending beyond connectivity. Its full-stack digital platform - combining satellite, cellular, IoT and data analytics - provides organizations with end-to-end data services from any location, regardless of existing infrastructure. Other investors participating in the round include North American-based Ryan Johnson, former CEO of BlackBridge, Nathan Kundtz, CEO of Rendered.ai, and Loren Padelford, former GM of Revenue at Shopify. Advisers included US-based legal firm Wilson Sonsini. Ahead of market launch later this year, the investment will drive continued innovation and commercialization of R3-IoT’s technology and help accelerate the company’s international growth plans, including establishing North American operations. The expansion plans will also see 20 new roles created over the next eighteen months in its engineering, technical, sales and marketing functions. Allan Cannon, CEO and Co-Founder of R3-IoT said: “The investment is a clear recognition of the potential for our platform to broaden the reach of satellite technologies by focusing on what has been, up until now, the ‘missing piece’ in digitization. We have ambitious plans and are in a strong position to accelerate our international growth strategy.” R3-IoT’s technology wirelessly connects smart devices such as sensors – on, or offshore, automatically transmitting data via the cloud to an intuitive insights platform - helping organizations to remotely manage risks, improve efficiencies and digitize operations across multiple sites and locations. It is aimed at organizations who require resilient connectivity 24/7, and sectors - including aquaculture, utilities, infrastructure, digital health, emergency services and energy - with operations in remote areas that lack traditional communications infrastructure. Chad Anderson, Managing Partner at Space Capital, a seed stage venture capital firm investing in the space economy said: "We immediately saw the opportunity with R3-IoT, which is essentially Nest for organizations with remote industrial facilities. This is the right company at the right time that will benefit tremendously from new backhaul capacity coming online through low-Earth orbit satellite communications.” “Scotland is the perfect testbed for this capability that will enable mission critical connectivity and we are thrilled to join the efforts of Allan, Kevin and the team at R3-IoT, supporting their growth into global markets where there is huge demand for their services.” Loren Padelford added: "The R3-IoT team is building a platform which fills a critical need for organizations worldwide. The ability to easily and quickly monitor physical sites and operations remotely allows central teams to operate more efficiently and effectively, saving assets, time and improving outcomes.”

Corelight Announces Integration for Microsoft Defender for IoT as a Data Source for the Platform

Corelight, Inc. | November 03, 2021

Corelight, provider of the industry's leading open network detection and response (NDR) platform, today announced product compatibility with Microsoft Defender for IoT. Corelight is the first Microsoft NDR partner to take advantage of Defender for IoT's cross-industry integration capabilities. Corelight customers can send data from deployed sensors to Microsoft 365 Defender, and in turn Defender for IoT to apply its behavioral analytics and machine learning techniques to discover and classify devices and to protect, detect, and respond to IoT attacks. This also enables Defender for IoT to apply its global IoT and OT threat intelligence. "The number of unmanaged systems on the Internet is soaring, and this ever-expanding risk surface is already a target. Unfortunately, most defenders lack the information they need about IoT and OT systems in their environment. Our integration combines best-in-class network evidence from Corelight, with the advanced vulnerability management, threat intelligence and detection and response capabilities of Microsoft Defender for IoT. The result is more efficient incident response, and deeper insight into IoT footprint, behavior, and risk." Greg Bell, co-founder and chief strategy officer for Corelight Corelight's open NDR solution provides full network coverage of on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments to help security operations teams using Defender for IoT detect and respond to the most challenging attacks. As an open platform, Defender for IoT can use network signal from Corelight sensors for asset discovery, inventory, risk assessment, detection, and mitigation. "Corelight is leveraging our open platform to share data to further enrich Microsoft Defender for IoT," said Nir Giller, Microsoft Defender for IoT group manager. "Customers who have deployed Corelight can secure their entire IoT and OT environments with Microsoft 365 Defender and Defender for IoT within minutes while adding more detections based on encrypted traffic analysis and complementing Microsoft's MITRE ATT&CK coverage." Additional benefits from Corelight's solution include: Network detection and response (NDR) coverage for every device on the network: Understand and manage risk across the entire IoT and OT landscape including high-value assets, managed and unmanaged endpoints, IoT devices, and cloud environments. Single platform for NDR: Corelight provides everything security operations teams need for detection and response, built on open standards including Zeek® for telemetry, Suricata for alerts, and Smart PCAP for packets. Faster answers for analysts and hunters: Rich, structured network data from 35+ protocols, 400+ data fields captured in real time provides additional context for alerts, accelerating incident response and dramatically expanding threat hunting capabilities. Integration with existing SOC toolsets: Correlate rich network telemetry with threat intelligence feeds for sending to multiple destinations simultaneously, including Microsoft Sentinel, Splunk, and other analytic tools. Deeper insights: Unique insights to hunt for attackers without compute-intensive practices that compromise privacy, find command-and-control (C2) activity with more than 50 unique insights that cover both known C2 toolkits and MITRE ATT&CK C2 techniques, and more. About Corelight Corelight provides security teams with network evidence so they can protect the world's most critical organizations and companies. Corelight's global customers include Fortune 500 companies, major government agencies, and large research universities. Based in San Francisco, Corelight is an open-core security company founded by the creators of Zeek, the widely-used network security technology.
