The government has now confirmed that the UK will be implementing the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To this end, Nominet has created an infographic based on the GDPR and Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO’s) Code of Practice on privacy notices, transparency and control [2] to serve as a guideline when developing IoT solutions.

Over the past decade, the speed of innovation has accelerated. From sensors to wireless connectivity to data analytics, IoT has infiltrated nearly every industry. The oil and gas industry is no exception, embracing digitization at a faster rate, and as a result seeing dramatic improvements in efficiency and safety that will further transform the industry. Prior to digitization, oil and gas drilling and completions operators had predominately low-tech methods for monitoring and managing their processes. Visual inspections and manual estimations created large margins for error and also put the safety of personnel and the environment at risk.

Two barriers currently exist to effective and powerful smart city solutions. First, many current smart city ICT deployments are based on custom systems that are not interoperable, portable across cities, extensible, or cost-effective. Second, a number of architectural design efforts are currently underway (e.g. ISO/IEC JTC1, IEC, IEEE, ITU and consortia) but have not yet converged, creating uncertainty among stakeholders. There is a lack of consensus on both a common language/taxonomy and smart city architectural principles.

The proliferation of connected technologies across multiple industries is undeniable. Research firm Gartner put the figure of connected things in use at 8.4 billion in 2017, up 31% from the year before. That will reach 20.4 billion devices by 2020, Gartner predicted. Within these figures, it’s estimated that consumer applications represents 63% of total IoT applications in 2017. Impressive, sure, but worth noting is that this means business applications represent a huge part of this growing opportunity, as much as 37% last year.
