New Arduino for IOT hardware hackers

October 1, 2016

Back in the old days hardware manufacturers felt safe in the knowledge that no mere hardware hacker could attempt to recreate their inventions. From Sony to Philips to LG to Samsung, the consumer electronics industry was locked up and no one could crack the case. Until those meddling Arduino kids came along.

5 Things to Know About Today's WiFi

Infographic |

Nearly 70% of WiFi devices sold this year will support 5GHz dual-band WiFi, surpassing the number of single-band 2.4Ghz devices in use, according to a new study from ABI Research. The ABI Research study, commissioned by the Wi-Fi Alliance , found that widespread adoption of smartphones, tablets and consumer electronics that include support for 802.11ac WiFi in the 5GHz bands is taking dual-band WiFi mainstream. ABI says that GHz usage will grow close to 100% saturation in the next five years. The Alliance calls this latest generation of unlicensed spectrum use Wi-Fi Certified ac, and says it offers more bandwidth for gigabit per second data rates and double the network capacity. (See Qualcomm Advances WiFi With MIMO.) It has put together the following infographic outlining the status of dual-band WiFi across the globe and why it should matter to consumers.

Internet of Things: Connecting Everything

Infographic |

IoT is growing significantly as consumers, businesses, and governments are recognizing the benefits of connecting inert devices to the internet. In fact, the number of connected objects is projected to reach 28 billion by 2020.Simply put IoT covers autonomous devices that are connected with each other over a network. It means that not only computers can be a part of IoT, but also all sorts of sensors and embedded devices, such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi. A ‘thing’ in IoT can be anything that is big enough to contain some – mostly wireless – transceiver and have its own unique method of identification (e.g. an IP address). It could be as small as a watch or as big as an entire city: eyeglasses, household goods or traffic lights. Even insects, farm animals or humans can be equipped with some sensors and transmitters, which look after them and monitor their location or health.
