IOT, Industry 4.0 changing the game in logistics: View

The logistics sector remains the core backbone of any nation’s economic growth and development. In fact, the efficient movement of material, especially by roads and highways makes all business activities possible. As it is widely known, 80% of goods in the country move in trucks. Unfortunately, majority of them don’t have GPS installed and this could emerge as a hurdle to smooth movement of material. In order to circumvent this, the Government is promoting FASTag for making toll payments and even offering discount to spur its usage. FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it. As money gets paid, there is an instant message on one’s mobile phone about one particular truck crossing a specific toll plaza. As a result, one would know the truck’s location every 100 odd kms, without GPS. This may not be a sophisticated way, but good enough for most people.
