3GPP recently began a new study of 5G New Radio (NR) operating in unlicensed spectrum. Access to shared and unlicensed spectrum will extend 5G into a wider range of deployments and create opportunity for innovation; it will enhance mobile broadband deployments anchored in licensed spectrum by aggregating spectrum for extreme bandwidths (similar to LTE-U and Licensed-Assisted Access), but also expand to new types of deployments such as enhanced local broadband and private networks similar to MulteFire. The area of private networks is garnishing a lot of interest from the industrial sector, which is interested in industrial IOT to enhance productivity.
