Marlab’s Mahesh RG believes, ‘Organizations who share/exchange information grow much faster than those who keep it as secret’

Media 7 | December 1, 2021

Mahesh RG, Head Data Engineering at Marlabs Canada INC, discusses the data-driven strategy and its effectiveness in today’s world. Read on as he elaborates the importance of AI and ML in data analytics to achieve business growth.

The industry has two main challenges: what to do with the Data being deposited, and where to host with confidence either to consume or to lend it for better usage.

MEDIA 7: Could you tell us something about your career journey so far, and what made you want this position at Marlabs?
MAHESH RG:
I grew up in a village, graduated in a suburb and did my post-graduation. I entered the IT profession in 2006 with a passion for learning and discovery. I earned very quick success and recognitions in the first job at the product-based company where I worked for 4 years, got exposure to SaaS platform with various business focus areas, which made an impact to move to start up on niche platform building team, where worked for couple years before got an opportunity to become part of IT Services industry through Marlabs. I became part of the Datawarehouse team and from day one until now, after completing 9 successful years, the learning continued. Played various roles in my 17+ years career and handled various complex project delivery and solutions on Data Management which is my passion. Currently, at Marlabs, I am responsible for converting customer Data challenges and visions to Data solutions through strategy. I have been fortunate to work along with some of the best in the industry to continue seeking to believe.

M7: What do you believe is the biggest hurdle for businesses while adopting a “data-driven strategy” today?
MRG:
The industry has two main challenges: what to do with the Data being deposited, and where to host with confidence either to consume or to lend it for better usage, due to which companies are ‘Data-rich and information poor’. The main bottleneck which current generation of the business is facing is due to looking at the problem from technology angle alone whereas it has to be looked at organizational asset since every organization accumulated data should treat it as NEW SOIL and NOT OIL, as OIL is not sustainable whereas SOIL if nurtured timely would be re-usable forever.

The future completely depends on the data of every business function/process. Without data, decision-making would be weaker and less meaningful.

M7: How important it is to build an effective data strategy to achieve business growth?
MRG:
Businesses are no longer run the same as 5 years before and COVID-19 influenced greatly to consider quick turnarounds with out of the box thinking. Organizations who share/exchange information would grow much faster than those who keep it as secret, that does not mean to publish everything open for the public, but with consideration of mutual benefits. Organizations driven by Data Czars would lead from the front for long term vision, gone are the days where Data was limited within LOBs which indirectly has added to slower growth.

M7: The future of the data analytics space seems exciting, how will data engineering change in the next few years?
MRG:
Future completely depends on the Data of every business function/process. Without data, decision-making would be weaker and less meaningful. In the last 5 years, most successful organizations embraced data to be appreciated as an asset. Meaningful and understandable data storytelling for the business is the key and hence it requires good deeper horizontal and verticalized data focus, every application irrespective of the size it started would become a Big Data in near future. Thus, data management was and will be the basis for every decision to be made in a growing organization.

M7: Few years down the line, how do you see AI/ML changing the world around us?
MRG:
Multiple approaches have emerged to support on organization growth and AI/ML is one of them, AI/ML would be one of the enablers to the world and data around, it would definitely create new avenues for business improvements through narrative into efficiencies and developing new business programs.

M7: What do you read, and how do you consume information to stay at the top of your game?
MRG:
Every information regarding data management reaches through multiple channels I never fail to follow especially LinkedIn, Blogs (from leaders whom I follow) and industry reviews through Forrester, attending webinars and listening to Podcasts.
