InfluxData Announces New Customers and Accelerated Momentum in Industrial Data and Internet of Things

InfluxData, creator of the leading time series platform InfluxDB, today announced accelerated momentum in Industrial Data and Internet of Things (IoT) driven by new customers, product enhancements and expanded industrial partnerships fueled by the growth of time series data. Customers including Tesla, Rolls Royce, Airbus, Teck, Graco and Graphite Energy are using InfluxDB to collect industrial data from devices and sensors.

New InfluxDB enhancements for IoT and IIoT applications
InfluxData is releasing key features to expedite IoT and Industrial IoT application building. New capabilities deliver a more intuitive experience for developers and engineers working with time series data at the edge and deliver better data processing for use cases spanning predictive maintenance, performance monitoring, energy optimization, operational technology, smart offices, smart homes and more.

New features include:
  • Run analytics at the edge with persistent and replicated data: Enables analytics at the edge, while also providing replication of data for centralized collection, visibility and additional analytic processing. Users can easily replicate data into InfluxDB Cloud from an InfluxDB instance deployed at the edge.
  • Broadcast new data to thousands of devices simultaneously: New feature adds the ability to distribute processed data with custom payloads to thousands of devices all at once from a single Flux script.
  • Intelligently deploy software at the edge with configurable packages: Users can now break down the stack into smaller base components, installing only what they need at the often-resource-constrained edge.
  • Contextualize IoT data across multiple sources: InfluxData has added MQTT data ingest to Telegraf, InfluxDB’s distributed collection agent. The new Telegraf MQTT input allows users to have more context over the IoT data they are ingesting from multiple sources.

Expanded partnerships to drive IIoT application development
Leading manufacturing providers PTC and Siemens are using InfluxDB as the time series engine for their industrial platforms to deliver high performance for IIoT and IoT at scale. InfluxDB is PTC’s preferred time series partner for ThingWorx, the leading industrial innovation platform. InfluxDB Cloud is also fully integrated as the time series data store within PTC Cloud on Microsoft Azure.

Additional industry-leading IIoT platforms including Bosch ctrlX, Siemens WinCC OA, Akenza IoT and Cogent DataHub have also partnered with InfluxData to use InfluxDB as a supported persistence provider and data historian.

ASE Unveils Plans for the World’s First 5G mmWave NR-DC SA Smart Factory

Strategy Analytics/TechInsights: Industrial, Automotive and Utilities Remain the Biggest Verticals for IoT Connections During 2022-30

Strategy Analytics published its latest report on IoT Cellular Connections by Vertical and by Air Interface (25,3G,4G&5G), forecasting a double-digit compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% during 2022-2030 According to Waseem Haider, Principal Analyst, Enterprise IoT at Strategy Analytics and author of the report, “IoT Cellular Connection by Air Interface by Vertical” which provide projections till 2030 - Industrial and Automotive will be the biggest verticals in terms of number of IoT Connections during the forecast period 2022-30. This latest update looks at the historical data as far as 2013 and forecasts IoT connections by Air Interface technology (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) and by Verticals – Automotive, Healthcare, Home (non-security), Industrial, Primary Processing, POS/Retail, Security, Transport, Utilities and others. During 2022-30, Healthcare is the highest growing vertical with a CAGR of 23% followed by Industrial and Automotive verticals with a CAGR of 17% and 16% respectively. Strategy Analytics believes that the largest sectors will continue their growth trajectory, with IoT connections in Industrial accounting for 21% in 2030, growing from 17% in 2022 and Automotive accounting for 18% in 2030, growing from 15% in 2022, during the forecast period of 2022-30. In 2022, Industrial is the leading sector with 17% of the total IoT connections followed by Automotive and Utilities with 15% connections, respectively. AMTSO Publishes Guidelines for Testing of IoT Security Products

AMTSO, the cybersecurity industry's testing standard community, today announced it has published its first Guidelines for Testing of IoT Security Products. Comprised of input from testers and vendors, the guidelines cover principles for the testing of IoT security products providing recommendations on test environment, sample selection, testing of specific security functionality, and performance benchmarking for testers. The guidelines include the following sections: General principles: All tests and benchmarks should focus on validating the end result and performance of protection delivered, instead of how the product functions on the backend. Sample selection: The guidelines provide guidance for challenges with choosing the right samples for IoT security solution benchmarking. For a relevant test, testers need to select samples that are still active, and that actually target the operating systems smart devices are running on. Determination of "detection": IoT security solutions work very differently than traditional cybersecurity products when it comes to detections and actions taken; for example, some solutions will simply detect and prevent a threat without notifying the user. The guidelines suggest to use threats with admin consoles that can be controlled by the tester or to use devices where the attack will be visible if conducted. Test environment: In an ideal case, all tests and benchmarks would be executed in a controllable environment using real devices. However, the setup can be complex, and if the tester decides against using real devices in the testing environment, it is advised that they should validate their approach by running their desired scenario with the security functionality of the security device disabled and checking the attack execution and success. Testing of specific security functionality: The guidelines embrace advice on different attack stages, including reconnaissance, initial access, and execution. They outline the possibility to test each stage individually vs. going through the whole attack at the same time. Choices on this should be documented in the testing methodology. Performance benchmarking: The guidelines also provide considerations on performance benchmarking, e.g. suggesting to differentiate between various use cases such as consumers vs. businesses, or the criticality of latency or reduced throughput per protocol, which depends on its purpose. The guidelines were approved by the AMTSO membership in June 2022.
