Jeff Bezos wants Congress to let Amazon draft facial recognition laws

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is hoping Congress will allow his company to draft laws around facial recognition technology. Bezos told reporters following Amazon’s hardware event this week that the company already has a public policy team “working on facial recognition regulations”. The news will be alarming to many human rights activists who have expressed serious concerns about Amazon’s facial recognition technology in particular. A test of Amazon’s facial recognition system Rekognition by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) compared pictures of all members of the House and Senate against 25,000 arrest photos. False matches disproportionately affected members of the Congressional Black Caucus, raising fears of automated racial profiling.
