Sequans Communications S.A., a leading provider of cellular IoT chips and modules, announced today an expansion of its existing 4G/5G licensing agreements with Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, granting special rights to Renesas that strengthen the go-to-market opportunities for Sequans' LTE-M/NB-IoT Monarch 2 and Taurus 5G platforms. In particular, by building on Renesas' extensive sales, distribution and customer support capabilities, the deal allows Sequans to expand its serviceable addressable market to India. Additionally, Renesas will take a small equity stake in Sequans, and Renesas' Executive Vice President and Head of IoT and Infrastructure business unit, Dr. Sailesh Chittipeddi, will be nominated for election to the Sequans board of directors at the June 2022 shareholder meeting. The combined value of the business agreements and the equity investment, which is expected to close by January 14, 2022 subject to customary closing conditions, is approximately $20 million.
These multi-year agreements are designed to allow Sequans and Renesas to achieve several mutually beneficial goals. First, the agreements provide better control of manufacturing and product cost, which is especially important given the current supply challenges. Second, the agreements reinforce the joint product offerings and expand market opportunities. Third, the equity stake and board seat facilitate management alignment to strengthen the partnership and make the joint business successful.

Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced two new microcontrollers (MCUs) designed for automotive actuator and sensor control applications supporting edge evolution in next-generation electronic and electrical (E/E) architecture. With the new RL78/F24 and RL78/F23, Renesas expands its RL78 Family of low-power 16-bit MCUs and strengthens its broader automotive portfolio, offering customers highly reliable, high-performance solutions for systems ranging from actuators to zone control.
With E/E architecture extending to include zone and domain control applications, control mechanisms are evolving to accommodate body control for automotive systems such as lights, windows, and mirrors; motor control for engine pumps and fans; and multiple sensor control. Moving forward, high-speed and secure connectivity with zone and domain controllers will be mission critical for edge electronic control units (ECUs). Renesas’ next-generation RL78/F24 and RL78/F23 MCUs address changing technology demands for actuator and sensor control with enhanced security, rich connectivity, and functional safety capabilities. The future of automotive systems design lies in a vehicle-centralized, zone-oriented E/E architecture, and that shift is sparking higher demand for more advanced functionality and better performance in actuator controller applications. The new RL78/F24 and RL78/F23 MCUs deliver up to approximately 70 percent faster operating frequencies than the previous generation, which can more than double the performance in brushless motor control (BLDC) applications. Renesas also enhanced the hardware accelerator and timer functions for motor control and added a 12-bit A/D converter, offering customers the enhanced functionality and performance levels they demand.

This initiative is a collaboration between the EMA, Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGG) and utilities provider SP Group. The testbed will eventually be rolled out across 1.4 million consumer accounts (mainly households) in Singapore by 2024, as part of the national drive towards digitalization and greater efficiency.
