The Social Internet of Things (SIoT) – When Social Networks meet the Internet of Things: Concept, Architecture and Network Characterization

March 1, 2016

Internet of Things, which leads to the so called “Social Internet of Things” (SIoT) paradigm. Recently, the SIoT has been the subject of several independent research activities as it promises to achieve scalable 33 solutions in networks interconnecting trillions of nodes and to support new interesting applications. More specifically, in this paper we have identified the types and the characteristics of the social relationships that can be established by objects in the SIoT. Furthermore, we have proposed a system architecture and the required basic functionality for an implementation of the SIoT. Finally, we have statistically analyzed the structure of the SIoT network.

Internet of Things (IoT) in the Federal Government

whitePaper | June 8, 2021

The Internet of Things is one of the most impactful IT innovations of our time. As consumers, we already encounter the IoT in our daily lives with smart items such as TVs, watches, and phones. As we journey further in time, IoT will become a ubiquitous aspect of life at home and in the workplace. Gartner defines the IoT as the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment.” More simply, IoT devices are computers (typically very small), that are embedded into an object to perform a function (e.g., collect data, run software) and connect to a network (e.g., the internet). For example, an IoT device could be an assembly line sensor capable of detecting minute deficiencies and determining when equipment needs repair.
