Virtualization and the Internet of Things

March 1, 2016

"Industrial control devices have been around for years. The initial devices were manufactured with a personality, a business logic that was already built in when they left the manufacturing plant to perform one fixed function (and nothing else). They were deployed for specific tasks such as controlling industrial equipment, electricity generation, power plants, trains,
planes, or automobiles. But times have changed. Today, devices are shipped comparatively bare and are then
given a personality through software download from USB devices, flash cards, or other programming over some form of connection. These more generic devices can be manufactured with a limited set of functionality and given more content during deployment by a system integrator.Responding to and driving these developments, technology for industrial control devices
has also changed dramatically in recent years—from 8-bit to 64-bit processors, from micro-controllers to multi-core—and now the Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the game again. As device manufacturers aim to take advantage of the opportunities created by IoT, one new technology is embedded virtualization. This paper discusses how embedded virtualization enables the device flexibility and security required for IoT. "

Wi-Fi 6: Leveling Up the Technology

whitePaper | October 17, 2022

The IEEE 802.11 working group, established in 1990, published its first Wi-Fi standard in 1997. Since that time, the rapid adoption of Wi-Fi-enabled devices, streaming services, and applications has provided users with innovative solutions to participate in nearly all facets of daily living—from anywhere and at any time.

Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and its Adoption

whitePaper | September 22, 2022

The complexity and cost of ensuring network security and remote access for employees and key business partners can overwhelm smaller businesses. Higher cloud adoption, a distributed workforce, mobile employees, the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks make traditional methods of ensuring secure communications across your organization overly complex and expensive. Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) reduces the surface area for attack by following zero trust tenets to provide access to applications. ZTNA from OpenVPN Cloud creates a private, secure overlay network for businesses, which connects all of their applications, private networks, workforce, and IoT devices together without needing to own and manage a multitude of complex and hard-to-scale security and data networking gear.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance - Building an industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) digital transformation strategy

whitePaper | June 20, 2022

The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) refers to the use of internet-connected sensors and devices in the industrial sectors, such as manufacturing, energy, automotive, healthcare, life sciences, and agriculture. IIoT allows telemetry data collection from equipment, machines, and field devices in an operational environment. These environments are commonly subject to industrial regulations; compute, networking, and power constraints; and inclement conditions, and all of these challenges contribute to the complexity of designing an IIoT solution.

Smart Intersections – IoT insights using Wi-Fi

whitePaper | November 28, 2019

Globally, more than 1.25 million people die in road traffic crashes every year and a further 50 million people are injured or disabled.¹ Meanwhile, congestion costs Australians $16.5 billion in 2015, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics. The price of congestion is expected to double between $27.7 and $37.3 billion by 2030, without major policy changes.

Threat detection and response in cloud environments

whitePaper | August 1, 2022

Cloud environments change fundamental assumptions in how to perform threat detection and response. The highly dynamic inventory of cloud workloads means systems come and go in seconds. When system configuration errors are introduced during a build, they can be exacerbated and amplified when automation replicates the errors across many workloads. Shared responsibility with the cloud service provider (CSP) creates potential threat detection gaps in the attack lifecycle.

The Business Value of Dell Technologies APEX Multicloud and As-a-Service Solutions

whitePaper | August 11, 2023

IDC’s research demonstrates that enterprise organizations are prioritizing digital infrastructure (DX) resiliency as a foundational element of their IT strategy. Organizations are looking for richer levels of visibility, cross-platform control, advanced data management, and protection that spans the entire ecosystem, including public or private cloud, on premises, colocation facility, and edge. DX initiatives rely on data-driven insights to deliver competitive differentiation, increased customer engagement, streamlined business operations, increased staff productivity, and growth in revenue and profitability. IT infrastructure is one of the crucial pillars of DX. In fact, DX cannot succeed without IT transformation, aligned with business strategy to meet or exceed service-level objectives for data-driven insights. Because of this realization, organizations are now focused on managing outcomes instead of IT infrastructure and looking to vendors and partners to help reach this goal.
